Hewlett Packard (HP) released the first generation laser printer around 1985 and with it, the first one-piece cartridge design meaning the drum and toner were housed together in one piece. The Recharging industry started shortly after in 1986 when customers were looking for a lower cost solution for their printing needs. Copier repair technicians started to drill holes in cartridges and squirt copier toner into the laser cartridges. This method was called “ Drill and Fill”. While this method was very inexpensive, the process yielded very high warranty rates for cartridges and customers were turned off by the 'aftermarket' cartridge industry. To an extent, the remanufactured cartridge industry continues to battle with the 'black eye' caused by quality concerns that were legitimate from the early years of the industry. In the mid 90's however, the recharging industry started to evolve and large players such and Mitsubishi, Fuji and Kuroki started manufacturing replacement supplies like toner and drums. These components and supplies became readily available on the open market. The lower costs and ease of availability for replacement components allowed the industry to survive and start performing at a level more equal to the OEM suppliers. In the early days, it was not uncommon to see warranty or defective product rates of 10%-15%. In recent years, good remanufacturers have been able to achieve defective rates closer to 2%. This is much closer to the warranty rates of the OEM suppliers like Lexmark, HP, Dell, and Brother. In 2000, the industry started demanding total systems from vendors when a new cartridge was brought to market. Prior to this, replacement parts were released as soon as they were developed which was in no particular order. We now have access to all the components that effect print quality. When the industry started, supplies were only available for three different cartridges that were sold in the market place. Two of those three cartridges are still being sold today. The industry suppliers are now striving to keep up with new printer models as they are released. We typically release compatible cartridges within 90-120 days from the time new HP printer models are introduced. Since the beginning of 2006, we have released over 40 new toner cartridges to keep up with HP and other Original Equipment Manufacturers.
